Parting Ways
Since the signing of the 2010 contract the 550 E-Board has sat down with the Administration on a number of occasions. Issues that were discussed included paid in-service training, fully reimbursed Eye and Dental coverage and increased staffing levels both on the blocks and at the hospital. The last issue is of paramount importance as it affects the personal safety of officers, Jail staff and civilians.
To date we have received no assurance from the Administration that they will remedy any of these issues.
In the month of April the Administration was clear. Sheriff Glodis couldn’t possibly pay for essentials such as two officers at hospitals and more than one body covering dozens of inmates in Work Release and Mini 5. There just wasn’t enough money in the budget to address such concerns.
And then a miracle: our Sheriff finds hundreds of thousands of dollars in unspoken-for monies. Decisions, decisions… what to invest all that money in. Hospital coverage? No, too obvious. How about security coverage on the blocks? Not so much. Now if you guessed a $3,000+ bonus for the Superior Officers and compensation of a weeks pay for all civilian employees, you’d be spot on.
None of us should begrudge our brothers in the Local 275 or the other unions: they worked hard for the monies that they received. But let’s be serious. How can that possibly be justified in a recession that is supposedly (according to the Sheriff) preventing him from addressing serious safety issues for monetary concerns? He should be ashamed.
How the 550 reacts to this is up to you. In the near future we will be hosting a General Membership meeting. Please consider attending this meeting and making your feelings known.
Whether we will part ways quietly or whether we (that is, you) will opt to hold Sheriff Glodis responsible for his latest fabrication will be the topic of discussion.
We hope to see you there.
Fraternally yours,
The Executive Board
Local 550, W.C.C.O.
